Mike,
First off I'd like to thank you, and everyone in your American Legion Post who
sent us the numerous boxes of snacks, cards, toiletries, etc... I can't tell
you what support like that does to the Soldiers, especially since we often put
out the snacks for the Soldiers after they have received their enemy threat
brief and right before they go out on convoys "outside the wire". Most of our
missions here in Afghanistan have been convoy missions that last anywhere from
7 to 18 hours, and you do get hungry inside your vehicle as you traverse the
bumpy roads of Afghanistan. You aren't always looking to eat an MRE and
having a snack or something else to eat is nice to have. The fruit snacks,
gum, granola bars, etc... are normally things you would pack in your kids
lunchbox but have been a pretty big favorite with our Soldiers. Your
organization definitely hit the mark there.
Getting the calling cards in increments of $20.00 should work if it isn't too
much trouble for you all. That will allow us to give them out to more people
than if they were in increments of $50.00. Either way we are going to give
them out to as many of our Soldiers as we can. I am still in awe that your
organization voted to donate $1,000.00 for the Soldiers in our unit.
Especially after sending us well over 20 boxes of snacks, cards, toiletries,
etc... Just fantastic support that we really do appreciate.
Again, thank you very much. Your support is truly, truly appreciated.

And from the Post: THE AMERICAN LEGION ONLY DID WHAT WAS MADE
POSSIBLE BY THE ISLAND MEMBERS AND FRIENDS THAT PARTICIPATED IN THURSDAY NIGHT
DINNERS AND THE MEMBERS WHO MADE THE GENEROUS DONATIONS. THANKS! American Legion Post 335 Troop Support We recently received a letter from Ron & Diane Becker. The Beckers are frequent visitors to the island and Ron - affectionately known as 'Kentucky Ron' - is a member of our post. He is the best friend of Michael Asnis' father-in-law, Ron Everman from Cincinnati, and a good friend of many of us on the island. Ron's son, JB, is commander of the 626 Battalion currently on duty in Afghanistan and also a member of our post. JB provided us with a list of items which servicemen and women serving in Afghanistan would most appreciate. Our post is sponsoring a drive to collect as much of these goods as possible. We plan to collect the goods, then the Post will pay for the postage to send the parcels to JB's unit of 400 troops in Afghanistan. If it is more convenient, we will accept checks made out to Diamond Island American Legion Post 335 or cash donations. You can drop off your contribution either at the Asnis cottage or at Maloney's doublewide bar and the legion post any time between now and Labor day. Thanks for your help and support. Items that can be sent to Servicemen and women:
